Best Way To Treat & Prevent Matting Cat Hair
What is Matting?
Matting is a natural process of accumulating sweat, dander (dead skin cells), dirt and loose hair that builds up on your cat's coat. If a cats coat is not washed, dried and brushed regularly, matting can occur. It becomes very difficult to brush out and cats do not enjoy their owners tugging at their hair to remove their knots and tangles!
"Knots may be brushed out with a Wash, Dry and Brush Groom (Pussycat Wash & Brush), however matting that cannot be brushed out will require shaving of the coat to allow it to grow back in a healthier state (Pussycat Clip or Shave Only)" We have some fashionable cat hair styles below that leave the fur on the head and tail leaving your cat looking and feeling lovely."
How To Prevent Matting
You can prevent matting by brushing your cat at home or with professional Wash & Dry Grooms in our salon in Howick. For those active cats where brushing alone will not be enough to maintain their coat, a shorter hair style may be a great solution to cutting down the maintenance you need to keep your cat looking and feeling great between grooms"
Is Your Cat's Hair Knotty or Matted?
If you can get a comb or brush through it, but you're cat is fighting it, a professional cat groomer will be able to remove the knots. If brushing is not an option, they can remove the matting by clipping your cat's hair into a stylish haircut that will remove the matting and allow new growth to come through that is easier to maintain.
Knotty Hair - Treatment
Knotty hair is usually able to be brushed out but this is often very difficult for cat owners as cats do NOT like their owners to take on this role for them. They don't however mind groomers doing it as they can tell we are practiced in the art of handling a cat to keep them calm. A wash, dry and brush is usually sufficient to remove knots from cat hair.
There is also a specific technique that groomers use to remove loose hair that helps prevent knots from occurring as loose hairs fall out and get tangled. Ask one of our groomers to show you how to brush your cat at home for the best results.
Matted Hair Removal Treatment
If the knots have grown into matting and the hair is not able to be brushed out, it will need to be shaved off or have the matting cut out. Sometimes individual mats can be removed and sometimes part of the coat needs to be shaved to enable the coat to grow back in a healthier state. This does not mean your cat needs to be entirely shaved. As you can see below there are awesome cat hair styles that leave the head and tail and shave or shorten the back and stomach. These cats look great and are much easier to maintain.
Their smooth new coat can then be maintained through home brushing as it grows or regular grooming to keep the hair shorter so that future matting doesn't occur to where shaving is required again.

Fashionable Hair Styles to prevent Matting
Longer Lion Cut
With a longer hair cut on the body, your cat is warmer for winter but still has less hair to get tangled and matted and less hair to lick which results in less fur balls.
Sometimes cat fur needs to be shaved in order to remove all the matting but generally the hair is left on the head and tail which means your cat still looks great and you can keep your cat warm in winter with a coat or woolly jumper.
